The Association for the Study of Play (TASP)
Play and Culture Series, Volume 12

CALL FOR PAPERS: Due Date June 15, 2010

Play: A Polyphony of Research, Theories, and Issues

Play is an essential tool for social, cognitive, and physical competence as well as identity development, but research has shown that societal trends have marginalized play. Programs nationally and around the world are presently experiencing a transitional period of change whereby play may be in jeopardy. That is, programs are under heightened scrutiny and pressure to respond to the current climate of accountability, economic uncertainty, technologically enhanced learning, changing demographics of students, and multiple other factors.

Manuscripts for the 12th Volume of the Play and Culture Series can include:

  • Play research from a range of fields (e.g., education; childcare; adults; elderly play; museums; parks; zoology; biology; community organizations)
  • Theoretical frameworks that support contemporary issues around play
  • Advocacy and reflective reports that address the many benefits of play
  • Authentic, research-based, successful play practices that break the transitional mold of instruction, especially for those who may be at risk of being marginalized
  • Other perspectives from a polyphony in play fields
